EXERCISES CAN HELP IN MANAGING MYASTHENIA GRAVIS

Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness and fatigue. While exercise may seem counterintuitive for people with myasthenia gravis, certain exercises can actually be beneficial in managing the condition.

1.Breathing Control, Pursed Lips

Take a breath in through your nose, as if you are smelling something.
Pucker your lips like you are getting ready to blow out candles on a birthday cake.
Breathe out very slowly through pursed-lips, taking two to three times as long as the time spent to breathe in at the start of the exercise.
Continue on as directed.

2.Thoracic Extension/pectoralis Stretch

Roll up a towel and place it on the floor across the area you will lie on.
Lie on your back with the towel positioned underneath and across your upper back.
Relax in this position, allowing your arms to drop out to the side and your chest to open up, stretching your upper back over the towel.
Remain here for the stated duration, and then move the towel down to the next segment of you upper back, and repeat.

3. Piriformis/gluteals Stretch

Lie on your back with your feet facing a wall.
Bend your unaffected leg and place your foot on the wall
Bend your affected leg and place the outside of your ankle just above your unaffected knee.
Allow your knee to relax outwards.
Move your body towards the wall until you feel a stretch in your buttock, and then hold this position.
It may become easier, so move yourself further in to the wall.

4.Bridge" Core/gluteals Strengthening

Lie on your back and place your feet on a stability ball with your knees bent.
Lift your hips up off the ground, driving the movement from your buttock muscles.
Make sure your keep your knees bent throughout, you will feel the effort in the back of your thighs.
Control the movement back down to the start position and repeat.

5. Diaphragmatic Breathing

Lie on your back, with your hand on your stomach.
Breathe in towards your hand so that your belly rounds like a balloon. Then, breathe out so that 'the balloon deflates'.
Note: Focus on breathing 'into your stomach' instead of your upper chest.
