EXERCISES CAN HELP IN MANAGING CONCUSSION

Exercises can play an important role in managing concussion. After a concussion, it is important to rest and avoid physical activity until symptoms subside. However, once symptoms have improved, exercise can help in managing the symptoms and aiding in the recovery process.

1.Cognitive Numerical Task

Stand up straight with a clear path in front of you.
Imagine a straight line on the floor extending away from you, or place a straight line of tape along the floor.
Walk along this line on the floor as if you are walking a tightrope.
Whilst walking complete a more complex mathematical task such as subtracting 7’s from 100.
Aim to maintain your balance and keep your feet stepping in the middle of the line whilst give correct answers.

2.Single-leg Stand

Stand and lift one leg.
While balancing, perform calculation tasks out loud. Start by counting backwards, each time subtracting four from 100. You may also think of other tasks to do.

3.Head Following Moving Target

Stand on foam with your feet hip-width apart.
Hold your thumb or object out in front of you at eye level. Make sure you can get clear focus on the object. Keep it in focus while you move the object from side to side, letting your head rotate at the same speed as the movement of the object. Move at a comfortable speed while keeping the object in clear focus. If the object gets blurry, you are moving your head too fast. This may make you feel dizzy. Rest if you need to between attempts to allow the dizziness to subside, then return to the exercise.
You can repeat this with the object moving up and down, or in a diagonal pattern. Keep feet relaxed on the foam, don't grip your toes to balance. Feeling some sway while performing this exercise is normal.
Note that you can put the foam in the corner so that the walls will provide support if you lose your balance

4.Ball Bouncing

Stand.
Bounce a ball in different directions no higher than your waist.

5.Shifting Weight

Sit on the ball with your feet hip-width apart.
Shift your weight to one leg.
Think about lifting your opposite knee but don't actually lift it up.
Keep your shoulders and hips in line, so that your back is stable and you keep any movement contained within your hips and torso.
